Indie is one of three siblings who lived in the deep forest of Singapore. There is a kind dog feeder, Karen, who rain or shine, brings food to them. She spotted them one day and went to great lengths to capture them with their bare hands. Indie was understandably a shy girl after their ordeal, and it took her a while to warm up. With her good looks, she was not short of adopters, but we know with her skittish nature, she is a high escape risk and hence we have to be selective. Months went by and there just wasn't anyone who met our expectations. Then one day, one of our adopters for another foster, Mowgli, came to visit. The minute they saw Indie, it was like Cupid strikes. She was set to be their second dog. It was not all fairy tale ending from day 1 as Mowgli had serious resource guarding issues. Love conquers everything…. After two weeks of intense training, they are now inseparable. Good things come in twos.

Thank you, Natalia and Elrid for being such committed owners and adopting Indie & Mowgli

Bingsu with Debbie

After

Background:

Bingsu was found with her siblings being abandoned by the roadside without their mom at the tender age of 2 months old. She is fortunate to have been reported and subsequently rescued by the shelter. Even so, a shelter is a scary place for such a small pup and there were so many pups of the same fate and age as her. Dogs who ended up at the shelter live in a timebomb... unless they are adopted within a timeframe, they will face euthanasia. Bingsu is one of the fortunate ones to have been spotted by Debbie when she saw a short video of the shelter (Pictured below). The connection was instant and Debbie’s family waited patiently for months for Bingsu to clear her medical procedures to come to Singapore. Today, Bingsu is a happy and bubbly girl, who enjoys the company of her 6 years old, human brother and they are inseparable. Thank you, Debbie, for adopting Bingsu!

In Debbie’s words:

When I decided to add a family member into our lives, I did a lot of research on breeds that would be suitable. I was immediately drawn to the Korean Jindos and decided to adopt instead of buying. At first, the journey was one hurdle after another. As the breed is not well known in Singapore and bringing a dog into Singapore is no easy task. Many private rescuers in Korea gave up on trying to help me adopt a Jindo. However, I am just so glad that not long after, I found PawsForCause posts on FB about rehoming Jindos from Korea. I had to take the leap of faith that it was not a scam as there weren’t any previous reviews or referrals. I trusted my instincts as Suzy was so passionate about dogs and wanted to help them to have better lives. This was the best decision of my life. Suzy and Joyce worked hard together to find a suitable fosterer for Bingsu that would help ease her into my family lifestyle and it’s amazing the work that she has done so far with giving dogs a better life. We should all adopt not shop.

Rocket with Zenia & Alrid

Background:

Rocket’s full background is a mystery. We will never know what led to him being found wandering in a village and was later rescued by the emergency services in Korea. Despite this rough patch in his life, Rocket remains a happy healthy boy and was fortunate to find a fosterer in Korea. Unfortunately, his fosterer could not foster anymore due to a change of circumstances, so Rocket ended up at a boarding place for a while until Zenia and Alrid met him. Rocket’s puppy eyes and bubbly temperament won them over and it was love at first sight for them. Their happy faces say it all! Thank you, Zenia and Alrid for adopting Rocket!

In Zenia’s and Alrid’s words:

We are very grateful to Paws For Cause and Suzy for “matchmaking” us with our precious boy, Rocket. Suzy is very experienced and helpful with our adoption process and provided us with useful tips for caring and training Rocket, which were very reassuring to us as new dog-owners. We are thankful that we can always turn to her for reliable advice and recommendations for our Rocket, even months after Rocket has integrated into our family.

Background:

Robbie It is beyond comprehension how any living being can abandon a dog like Robbie. Little is known about his past except that he was found wandering outside a primary school in Korea and was subsequently rescued and ended up at a shelter. Life was unkind to Robbie for a while, he was chained up in the outdoors at the shelter and living under harsh conditions. His basic needs were fulfilled but nothing else. Despite his tragic experience, he remained playful and unusually mature for a dog of his age. He doesn't cause any trouble, always complacent and compliant. The Ng family e-met him over a zoom session and it was love at first sight. Robbie arrived in Singapore totally unaffected by his ordeal in Korea, the flight or the car rides. He was ready to play and feast.  In fact, he has such good temperament that he has been recruited by a charity who trains dogs to be emotional support dogs.  We are looking forward to his graduation day. Thank you to the Ng family for adopting Robbie and they didn't just stop at 1, a few months on, they adopted Bingo, the chow mix.

Bingo is a Chow/Samoyed mix and in Singapore context, it would be inconceivable for such dogs to be abandoned, but sadly it's a common occurrence in Korea. Bingo was found wandering in a village, rescued and ended up at a shelter. Whilst Bingo was friendly with humans and dogs, he had acute fear of water, leash and grooming, hence his messy hairdo in the photo below. We were determined to rescue and rehome him regardless. The Ng family had a while back lost a chow whom they dearly loved, and she had left a big hole in their hearts. I have no qualms the Ng family is the right family for Bingo, only a question of if they are ready after their recent loss. Fast forward not so long later, they said yes!

Bingo arrived on 29th December 2022 and 2 weeks on, Tragedy struck, details of the accident can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dogssingapore/posts/1334893473736953

Bingo is now recovering.

We are very thankful to the Ng family for adopting Bingo and also, for sticking with him through sickness and health!

In the Ng’s family’s own words:

From the moment that we decided to adopt Robbie to when he finally came home, Suzy was there every step of the way to facilitate the process. She does all the behind the work administration tirelessly and without complaint, as I’m sure that is is not easy to coordinate cross countries. She gave us information to help ease Robbie into his home - for example his temperament and his food tolerances. Additionally, she helped to arrange a few zoom sessions to help make the wait for his arrival a little shorter. Suzy is transparent on the costs of transportation, medical and administrative fees. When Robbie arrived, she volunteered her time to visit him in quarantine, so he won’t feel so lonely as the visiting hours are during office hours. This just showcases her passion to rehome these dogs and how personally invested she is to make sure that they arrive safe.

After Robbie, we now have Bingo too and they are a testament of Suzy’s unwavering desire to give the dogs a new home.

Bear with Leong family

Bear’s home was the streets of Khatib. He scavenged for food, not knowing if and when there will be any for him. His life took a turn one day when he was captured as part of a TNR program. Whilst under the program, they discovered he had contracted TVT (Transmissible venereal tumors) and thankfully they have treated him for it. I am pleased to say that he is now cleared of the cancer and ready to move on ! The Leong family came along, and they weren't sure initially as Bear was not rather moody when he met them. His real self soon emerged, and they fell in love with him ! He loves the sun, sea and sand and often seen with his famous kopitiam uncle T shirt.

Thank you to the Leong Family for adopting Bear.

Mishka with Megan & family

Background:

Mishka, previously known as Gayoung,  was rescued alongside her two siblings, Dayoung and Nayoung. They were found wandering along the roadside in a village and were fortunate to be handed over to one of the government shelters. They remained unadopted for a while and soon was called to be on the euthanisa list. Megan came along and we are very grateful to her for giving Mishka a chance to live. Thanks to Megan’s amazing family, Mishka has blossomed into a playful and confident girl ! Thank you Megan & family !

In Megan's words:

We were looking for a dog to adopt when I came across an FB post from Paws for Cause. Dogs rescued from the Korean meat trade or strays/abandoned dogs in high-kill shelters are available for adoption. I contacted Paws for Cause for more information, did an interview to determine suitability, and sent us a list of puppies available for adoption.

This little one, Ga Young (my kids renamed her Mishka), caught our attention as her euthanisation date was 3 days away. We agreed that we should adopt her. We had a Zoom call to "meet" Mishka and fast forward 3 months, she is now a new addition to our family.

We were sceptical at first as we never knew there was an avenue to adopt rescued pets outside of Singapore but we were glad we went ahead and did it. ❤️

Julie with Ayesa

Julie before adoption
Julie after adoption

Before

After

Background:

Julie is a 3–4-years old Jindo/Spitz. There is little known about her background when rescued and she has been living with the fosterer shortly after being found. Potential adopters came and left, most were looking for puppies and Julie, beautiful and good-natured, would be overlooked time and time again. Then one day, we met Ayesa who, unlike many others, looked past Julie’s age and appreciates her for her calmness, and gentleness and decided to give Julie a chance at a permanent home in Singapore. Ayesa has not looked back since!

Julie is independent, gentle, well-mannered, laid back, and easy to handle and in Ayesa’s own words, she is the perfect dog for her! Julie absolutely loves her walks in the park, exploring new places and of course getting treats after. She also enjoys her belly rubs! She is very smart and does very well with daily routines. She is living the life that many rescues like her yearn for.

Thank you, Ayesa, for adopting and not buying! ‘As the saying goes, age is just a number and so adoption should not be based on just a number.

In Ayesa's words:

I’ve read about Jindos and how rampant the meat trade farms are in Korea. So, when I saw the post about Julie, I was immediately drawn to it. Of course, it came with a lot of doubt on my end since Julie was not physically in Singapore and at the time, I had to wait 3 months before she flew to Singapore. However, Sue updated me with photos and videos of her every week and guided me through the application for her licences (required to enter Singapore).

The wait was long, but it was well worth it. I couldn’t ask for a better dog. Julie’s temperament is very well suited to my lifestyle. Since Julie is an adult dog, it took a while to gain her trust, the 10 days of quarantine were somewhat useful in getting her familiarised with me. When she came home, she quickly became comfortable. She now greets me with excitement when I get home from work, she’s the sweetest little girl when she wakes up in the morning, and we enjoy our morning and evening walks together.

For me, her being older was actually an advantage, she had passed the puppy stage and was already grass trained. There have been no potty accidents inside the house, she’s mature and calm at home, and no chewing of furniture etc.

Robin with Ben & Liz

Similar to Soya, Robin’s story is one which brings tears to one’s eyes. Robin had 3 siblings, all of whom were tied with a fishing line to an abandoned outhouse. They were kept alive with food but nothing else. It is unclear what their purpose was to the house owner who kept them there. As they grew, the fishing line cut through their necks, leaving raw open skin exposed. One day, a passer-by saw their plight and reported to our rescuer. Sadly, she only managed to convince the owner to give up one dog, who is Robin. It took his rescuer more than a year to nurse and rehab Robin back to health, physically and mentally. His current fur parents, Ben and Liz are first-time owners, and we are glad they took the leap of faith to give Robin the forever home he so deserves. He is now living his happily-ever-after story with his feline sibling, Batman.

Thank you to Ben and Liz for adopting Robin.

Peanut was found alongside six siblings when he was only four-six weeks old, without their mum. Thanks to their feeder who found them, they probably would not have made it in the wild by themselves. Cassandra and her husband, Ben, were looking to adopt a pup and the connection with Cassandra was almost immediate whilst poor Ben had to work a little harder :). They did a wonderful job building Peanut’s confidence from a shy pup to a handsome, bold boy. Well done both !  This was chapter 1…

Chapter 2 starts with Hazel, who was rescued when they were 2-3 months old. She was from a litter of 3 and found by a feeder. We had too many fosters on hand  then and had to “outsource” the fostering. Cassandra and Ben were the first to come to mind. This time round, Hazel warmed up to Ben quicker and to our delight,  it led to a foster fail !

Peanut and Hazel have great chemistry together, the nutty combination !

Thank you Cassandra and Ben for adopting Peanut and Hazel.

Theo with Jeff

Theo is a big gentle giant which makes him a beauty but his size was a beast to many adopters. As a result, he was constantly overlooked by adopters and consequently, he stayed at the shelter for too long and was put on the euthanasia list. Paws for Cause was given slightly more than a week to rehome him and time was running out on us. His deadline was on a Sat and on Wed, we contacted Jeff. He met Theo on Zoom and had little qualms about adopting him. He said yes the same day! We are all elated about the news. If you do meet Theo one day, you will see big dogs can behave like small puppies.

Thank you Jeff for adopting Theo.

Champs with Yuan Qing

Champs before adoption

Before

After

After

Background:

Champ is yet another abandonment case, notorious in a certain town where ex-pats abandon their dogs when they return to their home country. Due to their size and “fierce” image, adopters, local or foreign, for adult German Shepherds (GSD) are far and few between. The shelter in Korea told me Champs is likely to be adopted as a guard dog for farms (chained their whole life) or euthanised and that was enough to convince me I had to at least try to rehome him. I would never imagine I was capable of rehoming him to Singapore because GSD are scheduled breeds and come with stringent procedures to adhere to... As the saying goes, love conquers everything. I looked into Champs’ eyes and his pleas were heard and it gave me the determination to accomplish what I thought was impossible. Champs arrived on 4th Jan 2023 to his parents, Yuan Qing and his partner. Their love for him is unquestionable and unconditional. They also defy the myth that you need to be an experienced dog owner to make good dog owners, especially for a big dog like Champ. Success stories like Champs’ is the reason why we do what we do… relentlessly.

Thank you to Yuan Qing for adopting Champ.

In Yuan Qing’s words:

Adopting a dog is a big decision for most people and especially more so for first time dog owners given the amount of uncertainty and responsibilities associated with owning one. Our journey started when we first saw a post on Facebook by Paws for Cause putting Champ, a German Shepherd Mix, up for adoption. It was love at first sight and we immediately registered our interest. We were super excited to receive a call later that day by Suzy.

Despite our lack of experience with dogs, Suzy was patient in trying to understand our motivation for trying to adopt one. She was patient in explaining the adoption process in detail, as well as potential pitfalls and stress points that first time owners may face. Suzy was extremely supportive in the adoption process, making sure all relevant documentation and vaccination requirements were met and provided timely updates throughout the adoption process. She was also prompt in her replies to any questions that we had regarding both the dog and the adoption process. Post adoption, Suzy also followed up on the wellbeing of the dog and us and went the extreme mile to help look for suitable toys and trainer for Champ.

The process of adopting Champ from overseas could have been so different for a first-time dog owner like us and both Champ and ourselves would like to express our gratitude to the dedication that Suzy has shown through the entire process. We hope more dogs could benefit from the work that is being done at Paws for Cause!

Soya with Charmaine & Wilbert

Before

After

Soya’s story is a compelling one. We suspect she was abandoned and by the time she was found, she was in a bad way (see picture above). She had nearly lost all her fur, severely malnourished and all her pups have died of parvo.

The shelter had deemed her a case of “beyond hope” and had lined her up for euthanasia. Fate has it that our partner rescuer, SK,  in Korea spotted her and she knew Soya deserves a second chance. Her decision made a difference between life and death. SK brought Soya home and painstakingly, over the course of 1 year, brought her back to health. Soya looks like a completely different dog now! When I spoke to Charmaine and Wilbert, my adopters in Singapore, they expressed that they are willing to consider a mature dog. Most adopters look for puppy and dogs under 2 years old but we are grateful Charmaine and Wilbert are willing to look past her age and gave Soya the chance of a new life in Singapore. They will tell you that mature dogs make just as good a pet dog and age is just a number.

Thank you to Charmine and Wilbert for adopting Soya.

Alibaba was one of the many strays in Khatib area. Food was scarce and life was full of uncertainties. One day, he was captured under the RSPCA TNR program, treated for his TVT cancer.  Sumathi n family unfortunately had lost their dog to cancer and have been on the lookout. Baba was similar to their previous dog in many ways, so the connection was rather instant.  They shower baba with unconditional tender loving care and endless supply of nutritious food. It is truly a happily ever after story.

A big thank you to Sumathi Tangarajoo family for giving him the best home he could ever dreamed of and Angelina Selvam, baba for the excellent work as baba's fosterer !

To say Wolfie is a lucky dog is an understatement and here is his story. We know nothing about Wolfie’s background except that he somehow ended up in a high-kill shelter where, on average, dogs are only given 14 days or so to be adopted. After that, they will expire and perish. June’s family approached us with a very genuine interest to help a dog in need. They browsed through hundreds of dogs’ profiles and eventually picked Wolfie. If this is not lucky, I don't know what is. The day we bailed Wolfie out of the shelter was an emotional moment for all, knowing we, who may not be doctors, have literally saved his life. Today Wolfie is living a comfortable life with his sister, who is not keen on playing but Wolfie never gives up trying to convince her. Thank you to June’s family for saving a life.

Thank you to June for adopting Wolfie.

Every time I visit the shelter, I hear the unbearable bark of every dog in the kennel calling out for me to rescue them. I whisper to some of them “I will try my best” and I really do. Gangnam is one of these dogs whom I promised, and I did bring him home to Singapore. Seeing Gangnam’s life today is every reminder of the reason why I started this rescue initiative. Unbeknown to us, Gangnam turns out to be a Baywatch babe. He can swim, surf and even flirt with the ladies by the beach. Who would have guessed! Gangnam looking all serious being the captain of the ship.

Thank you to Jane and Estella for adopting Gangnam.

Chalksy’s owner in Korea sadly passed away and his family cold heartedly handed him over to the shelter to be put down and never turned back. Chalksy was confused and frightened, wondering what has he done wrong to end up in a cage with hundreds of other dogs.  He was one of the lucky few selected to be rehomed to Singapore. We are glad to announce Priscilla and Jeff welcomed Chalksy into their home on 11th November 2022. As the saying goes,  don’t underestimate dogs’ resilience. Despite his ordeal, Chalksy was ready to trust humans again with no qualms. All he wanted was to play with his toys, eat from the bin, mess around with the Xmas ornaments…everything he should and should not play with. like a typical puppy.

Thank you, Priscilla and Jeff, for giving Chalksy a forever home.

We are not sure how Archie ended up in the deep forest of Singapore and only knew, he was spotted wandering in the forest by himself.  He was trying to fit in with the adult dogs in the area, which is a risky thing for a pup to do as wild dogs usually have strong territorial instincts. The same feeder as Indie (read above), spotted him from a distance and was determined to capture him. She partnered with SPCA and successfully seized him eventually. He was understandably a scared boy but his fosterer, Gabby and Keith, did a brilliant job with him. Archie is one of the most destructive pup we ever have… the list of lost items is long and they include: hair clips, scrunchy, airtag, tumi bags, countless slippers. He was just too cute for us to be upset with him for more than 5 secs. Suki and Mahesh saw him and fell in love with this mini “German Shepherd”. The home trial went so well it was like Archie told us he had found his home.

Thank you Suchi and Mahesh for adopting and not buying.

Anyone who met Teddy today would find it unbelievable and unbearable how a dog like him could once be on the euthanasia list. Teddy was found tied to a station/bus stop on a cold wet night. We are not sure how long he has been there. Similar to Theo, he is a gentle giant and due to his size, he is often overlooked by adopters. After staying at the shelter for a while, he was soon on the euthanasia list. We were fortunate to find him a fosterer quickly and he was given another chance in life. Wanlu and Laura met Teddy over Zoom and fortunately for us, they love big dogs. So Teddy was the obvious choice. Today, Teddy is the apple of her fur parents and grandparents’ eyes. Due to his amazing temperament, like Robbie, he was also selected to be trained as an emotional support dog and has started seeing clients! Check out Teddy in action here:
